Jiran, or the Arabic Community Action Summer, was founded in 2018 to connect recently arrived Arabic-speaking families to the United States with United States-based students of Arabic. Several members of the Middlebury C.V. Starr School in Amman, Jordan built Jiran to provide a platform for these two groups to learn from each other. In July 2018, Jiran will run its first summer program, in which a group of five students will partner with Arabic-speaking families in New Britain, Connecticut for a linguistic and cultural exchange program. Student participants will be responsible for helping their partner family make social connections in their new community, work towards their personal goals, and explore the culture of their new community. These students will take intensive classes in colloquial Arabic and will participate in an experiential curriculum on topics related to immigration and refugee resettlement. At the end of the five week program, the students will have improved their colloquial Arabic ability, families will be better prepared to fully participate in their new community, and lifelong relationships will develop.
